The feed box of a lathe, also known as the gearbox, is an essential component of the lathe. It is typically fixed on the left front side of the lathe bed and connected to the apron through a lead screw or feed rod, thereby transmitting motion to the tool post for cutting operations. Internally, it contains a series of gears and transmission mechanisms, such as the feed speed change mechanism, whose primary function is to transfer the rotational motion of the spindle to the tool post, enabling the tool's feed movement and serving as the source of feed power for the tool. Through its internal gears and transmission mechanisms, the feed box can adjust the feed speed and feed rate according to machining requirements, achieving linear feed movement of the tool to attain the desired surface accuracy of the workpiece. By adjusting the gear ratios, different feed speeds can be achieved to meet the demands of various machining processes. Additionally, the speed change mechanism of the feed box allows for the selection of multiple feed speeds.
